The Death of Woke Gaming

The Resurgence of Traditionalism

"Examining the Shift Away from Wokeness in the Industry"

In recent months, the gaming industry has witnessed a notable shift away from what some perceive as excessive "wokeness" in game development and journalism. This shift has sparked discussions reminiscent of the Gamergate controversy from a decade ago, dubbed by some as Gamers Gate 2.0. With the likes of websites such as Kotaku and TheGamer restructuring there platforms and laying off journalists associated with woke ideologies, coupled with instances of consumer backlash and boycotts against certain game developers, it appears that a significant segment of the gaming community is pushing back against what they perceive as forced ideological agendas in gaming.

One of the most prominent examples of this shift can be observed in the restructuring of gaming journalism platform Kotaku. This websites, once known for it's strong advocacy of progressive ideologies within the gaming sphere, have faced significant criticism for what many perceive as biased reporting and agenda-driven content. In response to dwindling readership and criticism from their audience, the platform has undergone significant restructuring, including the layoff of journalists and executives associated with promoting woke narratives.

The backlash against woke ideologies in gaming is not limited to journalism alone. Game developers and publishers have also faced scrutiny and consumer backlash for incorporating what some perceive as forced diversity and woke narratives into their games. One notable example is the case of Sweet Baby inc., a Canadian narrative development and consultation studio based in Montreal. Which is now facing a massive Steam boycott following the release of multiple games they consulted on that incorporated heavy-handed woke themes. The backlash has resulted in significant financial losses for the company and it's partners, highlighting the potential risks associated with alienating a large portion of the gaming community.

Moreover, the inclusion of woke elements and gender-bender characters in gaming properties and intellectual properties (IPs) has been met with dwindling sales and consumer disinterest. While diversity and representation are undoubtedly important aspects of modern gaming, many gamers argue that forcing such elements into games at the expense of gameplay and narrative quality ultimately detracts from the overall gaming experience. This sentiment has been reflected in the declining sales of games that prioritize woke agendas over compelling gameplay and storytelling.

Conclusion

The adage "If you go woke, you go broke" has become increasingly relevant in the gaming industry, serving as a cautionary tale for developers and publishers seeking to inject ideological agendas into their games. While diversity and inclusivity are undoubtedly important values, they must be approached with nuance and respect for the medium's artistic integrity. The recent shift away from wokeness in the gaming industry signals a return to traditional values of gameplay, storytelling, and consumer satisfaction, ultimately reaffirming the importance of catering to the diverse tastes and preferences of the gaming community.
