Saving For The Win

"Short Stories w/ Coach"

Jake sat cross-legged on his bed, staring at the glossy magazine spread before him. The pages were filled with high-resolution screenshots of the most anticipated video game console of the decade, its sleek design almost glowing under the bright studio lights of the promotional shoot. Every article he read, every rumor he overheard at school, and every flashy commercial only fueled his obsession. He had to have it.

The problem was, even at only twelve years old, Jake knew there was no way his parents could afford to buy it for him - not on launch day at least. Maybe, if he were lucky, he’d find it wrapped under the tree at Christmas, but by then, summer vacation would be long over. All his friends were convinced their parents would be getting them one the weekend it released. He didn’t want to be left behind. That’s when he made the decision... he would buy it himself.

The Grind Begins

Jake started saving every penny he could get his hands on. He mowed lawns in the blazing summer heat, shoveled driveways when winter rolled around, and even convinced a local grocery store to let him bag groceries for tips. His parents gave him a small weekly allowance, which he immediately stashed away in an old metal lunchbox locked under his bed. But it still wasn’t enough.

He turned to his most prized possessions, his action figures, his trading cards, and even his beloved handheld gaming system. He sold them quietly, without his parents knowing, bargaining with kids in the neighborhood or finding buyers at school. Every dollar mattered.

He tracked his savings meticulously in a spiral notebook, marking his progress with a sense of purpose. Every new gaming magazine he bought was not just for entertainment but research, he needed to know exactly which games would be available at launch, which ones had the best reviews, and which accessories were essential. He memorized every TV commercial and analyzed every detail, making sure he was fully prepared for the moment he could finally walk into the store and claim his prize.

The Moment of Truth

As months passed, he gradually lost track of his progress. Blindly determined, knowing only that he had to keep pressing forward as the launch day drew closer. On the final night before release, Jake sat in his room, surrounded by posters of the console, flipping through his favorite magazine one last time. His heart pounded with excitement. Tomorrow was the day.

The next morning, he cracked open his makeshift bank, spreading out his hard-earned cash on the bed. But as he counted, his heart sank. He was short. Even after everything, he had only managed to save around $500—just shy of the $600 he needed to buy the console, an extra controller, and the handful of launch games he had his eyes on.

Defeat settled in his chest like a stone. He had come so far. Just then, his parents walked into the room. They had watched him grind for months, never once asking for a handout, never once complaining. They smiled, proud of the determination he had shown. “You’ve worked too hard to stop now,” his dad said, placing a crisp $100 bill on the bed. “Consider it a reward for all your effort.”

Jake stared at the money, then at his parents. He didn’t need to ask if they could afford it, he knew they couldn’t. This wasn’t just about the money. It was about seeing their son set a goal and push himself harder than ever before to reach it. They were proud of him, and at that moment, he had never felt prouder of himself.

The Big Day

The trip to the mall was a blur. He walked into the video game store, lunchbox full of cash in hand, ready to make the biggest purchase of his life. The moment he saw the console in its pristine packaging behind the glass counter, his heart raced. He handed over the money, one bill at a time, until the cashier handed him the box, along with the extra controller and the games he had dreamed about for so long.

As he stepped out of the store, he scanned the area for his friends, expecting to see them making their own purchases. But he didn’t recognize anyone. Maybe they had already come earlier in the day, already at home setting up their systems. Either way, it didn’t matter. He had done it.

The Shocking Reality

Monday morning, the final week of school before summer break, Jake walked into class expecting excited chatter about the new console. But instead of joy, he was met with disappointment.

None of his friends had gotten it. One by one, they shared their stories—parents who said it was too expensive, stores that had run out of stock, promises that maybe, just maybe, they’d get it for Christmas. The kids who had boasted about playing all summer now sat in silence, defeated.

Jake didn’t gloat. He didn’t rub it in their faces. Instead, he sat there, quietly realizing just how much his hard work had paid off. He wasn’t just one of the kids wishing for something—he had made it happen.

A Summer to Remember

That summer Jake’s house became the spot. Kids from the neighborhood, some he barely even talked to before, started showing up, eager to play the games they had only read about. His once quiet room, once covered in posters and magazine clippings, was now filled with the real thing. The console that had started as a dream was now the centerpiece of his summer.

What began as a simple desire to keep up with his friends had transformed into something bigger. His parents saw him in a new light, not just as their son, but as someone capable of setting a goal and achieving it. His social status at school shifted, he wasn’t just another kid in the crowd. He was the one who had made it happen.

And as summer days turned into nights, as laughter and competition filled his home, Jake knew one thing for certain, this wasn’t just about a video game console. This was about proving something, to himself, to his parents, and to everyone around him.

He had earned this. And that feeling? That was worth more than anything....
